Army & Air Force Exchange Service, known as The Exchange, and also as AAFES, is a Department of Defense sub-agency that provides tax-free retail services and merchandise to Active Duty, Guard and Reserve members, military retirees and their families. The Exchange is responsible for more than 2,500 facilities in 33 countries, 50 states, five U.S. territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa) and the District of Columbia. Facilities include 123 main stores, 168 Military Clothing stores, nearly 500 convenience stores (troop stores, Express locations, Class Six outlets), 164 specialty stores and 67 theaters. The Exchange has nearly 1,500 quick-serve restaurants such as Subway, Boston Market and Starbucks as well as more than 3,300 concession operations. The Exchange operates 49 contingency locations in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Romania, Cyprus, Bosnia and Kosovo. The Exchange funds 97 percent of its operating budget from the sale of goods and services. The remaining 3 percent of Exchange funding comes from appropriated funds; the vast majority of this support is devoted to overseas operations. One hundred percent of Exchange earnings support Soldiers, Airmen and their families. Roughly two-thirds of Exchange earnings are paid to Army MWR and Air Force Services programs.
